Heritage Trail 2: Mike and Sally's Place on Long Island

Under surveillance...The Girls (two of them ) and I check out what's going on.

Resting Up for Whatever Comes!
Sally has only recently moved back to the house she grew up in. It was originally built in the late 1700's, added to in the late 1800's, and added to a third time in the late 1900's! Sally's grandparents, parents, and now Sally have lived on this land for a very long time. I know Sally and Mike will not be adding any more rooms, but they are in the process of moving the kitchen from one end of the house to the other. In the process, as is true with all remodeling, there are all kinds of "other" things that have to
be done to make it hang together. So that's the project at hand. Lots of work to be done...but great work.
American Gothic
This is a painting Sally did for her parents many years ago.
It gives one a general idea of the layout, but there is so much more when you look closer!
Russet on his throne: "Is it time for a walk yet?"
New door going into the new kitchen...but first the understructure...
Back yard heading to koi pond
Beyond pond lies CSHL and the Long Island Sound
(So Brad works right next door!)
Horseshoe Crab for Auggie
Squash is coming on.
Phlox for the Table
Thinking of Aunt Barby at 22 Locust reading this
Love the name!

The Japanese have an word "wabi", and it is my understanding
that it means "made more beautiful with age". I couldn't stop taking
pictures of the water spickets and  thinking about the hands that have
 kept them polished. Beautiful!

Katie gives 3 gallons of milk a day!
Sally turns it into cheese, yogurt, ice cream, whipped cream....yum!
The chef...look closely. OMG! Can she cook!

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Next stop...the ferry across the Long Island Sound to Connecticut and Barby!

PS.   There was a brief Sylvia Elmer sighting here on Long Island...sorry no photos taken.  Big transitions
going on in her world!

  1. I love how this story is unfolding! I dare not comment for fear there will be more to respond to the next time I look!

I love that we can all see the REST of your journey, the "legs" that we were not a part of.

  2. The photo of you and Mike is the best ever.

I can see the newspaper caption:

    "Twins separated at birth reunited."

  3. I know!
It's kind of like "Where's Paddle!" as I write this story.....where am I now. Such a great trip!

  4. I love having just discovered the inside scoop into your adventure East. Where have I been over the past month to have not caught up on it?! I'm so grateful to have been able to catch a glimpse of you during your visit but wish deeply now that your trip could have been only a month later! Even still, it's fun to see pictures of Mike and Sally's and know the scene. The picture of the goose looking in through the door is classic. I've been there! What a wonderful overview.
