Too Darn Cold and Wet...to Get Out of the Car

"Let's just stay in the car!"

Back of THE house

I’ve been Super Granny for the last week. Hope and Peter have bought a "fixer upper" that is going to be unlivable for about six months.
Well today I needed to get a couple of errands done, so I picked up Gus at pre-kindergarten and off we went. First we were going to pick up Sencha green tea and then walk to a gallery that has a lot of clay figures in it (Gus has just recently learned how to work with clay, so this seemed like a good rainy day activity). But when we parked on Alberta Street, the rain had mixed with snow and it was nasty outside!
“Granny, let’s just watch the rain on the windows for a little while,” suggested Gus from his car seat behind me, “Maybe I could come up there and sit with you!” What a great idea! Why pay for a meditation retreat when you can sit and watch the rain dribble down the windshield with your five-year-old grandson! So up he climbed. What did not cross my mind was that Gus had never spent time in the front seat of a car! Why would he have! He has to be strapped into the back all the time, of course. No more jumping up and down on the front seat as Mama drives!
So we made up for lack of experience in about an hour in the front seat! The drizzle of the rain was only a small part of the entertainment……..
First Gus figured out how the heater worked.
Next came the CD Player. This gave us a chance to practice numbers.
Every dial and button was explored.
He learned "load", "unload", "insert" and "eject".
"Why is it called 'glove compartment'?"
"This could be a fairy jump rope!"
"Can I wear your glasses?"
P is for Park, D is for Drive, and R is for Reverse.
"I want to drive the car, Granny! Please!"
"We better turn the windshield wipers on so we can see where we're driving!"
I'm sure the locals wondered, "What the !!!!!!!" when Gus laid on the horn four times in a row!
"It is always fun spending time with Granny!"

And in the end Gus did get to drive. I gave him a multitude of  lessons while sitting there on Alberta Street, and I promised him that if he could remember how to turn the car on and release the break and get a CD playing our favorite Muppits music, and put the car in Drive, then I would let him steer the car ( drive) in the Whole Foods Parking lot when we got back to my apartment.
As for the tea and gallery, we finally braved the stormy weather and accomplished what we had set out to do. And that, said Pooh, is that!

  1. Love this! You explore the wonder of everyday things.
Answering a question, How does this work?

KIds need real life experiences. The real thing not the toy.

Eliza sat in David's lap and drove to nursery school (one mile on a quiet road) whenever it was his turn to take her. He made her promise not to mention this to her teachers. It was their little secret. He didn't think they would approve. She is a great driver now. Been practicing since she was five!

  2. This is such a real and lovely moment! Thank you! Makes me feel as though I had been right there (in the back seat), understanding and watching a five-year-old's insatiable curiosity about pushing buttons/levers, etc. that DO something! And the comment about the fairy jump rope gives such insight into Augie's thinking. Loved it!
