Who is in Charge?
The kids are on their own now
Just as I hoped they’d be,
They’re earning a good living
And that is a joy for me!
The state I’m in was predictable,
They’re launched, so I am free.
But what’s this new situation?
They’re trying to look after me!
What are your plans? they question,
Are you sure that you should
go?
Is there anything I can help
you with?
I’m very capable, you know.
And then they ask about paper work
Is my will complete and on file?
And I assure them that I’ve done it
And my “Directive” has been done for a
while.
I can’t believe they’re worrying
About my plans to die
For I am just getting started
I’ve found new adventures to try,
The kids can be the worriers
If that’s what they want to be
But I’m in charge and I’m at large
On this island in the sea.

The above poem was
inspired by Atul Gawande’s book,
Being Mortal,
Medicine and What Matters in the End
All joking aside,
Gretchen has a lot of experience with seniors who do not have their end of life
paperwork in order, and it causes huge problems for their children. This book
is definitely recommended reading for people sixty-five and older.

YOU are in charge. The rest of us just trying to keep up! Congratulations on all you have accomplished! xo
