Sand Dollar Exploration

Can you see the perfect star in the center?
That is where the doves hang out inside.
When Auggie came to visit yesterday, he discovered the fairies had left five perfect sand dollars on the shelf. Apparently they've been spending time at the beach! I had heard that every sand dollar contains five doves, so we decided to explore. However, we learned pretty quickly that looking for doves in a sand dollar is not like looking for pieces of metal in an Etch a Sketch! A gentle tap with a hammer is a good start, but after that it works better to chip the top off with a knife. Here's the story in picture form.

What I really wanted to show you is how BIG Auggie's feet are getting!
I hope he doesn't step on a fairy!

  1. When you shake the sand dollar do you hear the birds inside?

    1. No....they are attached to hold the structure of the sand dollar. But when the sand dollar is broken, they fly free!
