This was no ordinary day. This was the beginning of the third day at Granny's, and we knew she was a sucker for creative and inventive thinking. So when she let us have ten miniature marshmallows in our hot chocolate, we came up with a scientific experiment that would force her to give us lots and lots of marshmallows! However, I did not know I would have to write the story for her blog! Here is what we did.
Our Marshmallow Experiment
By Jude Lizotte
One January cold day, Granny, Gus and I decided to do an experiment with marshmallows. We took three small marshmallows from a bag and we made them into a web with our fingers. Next we made them into a circle. We tried three experiments with our glob of marshmallow.
First we went outside and the marshmallow circle got thicker. Then we put three marshmallows into the microwave. They got very hot and burned my finger! They melted into a puddle-like thing. Next we put the circle of gooey marshmallows in the freezer and the refrigerator. The one in the refrigerator became cold and mushy. The one in the freezer became hard and solid like a rock. We ate the cold, hard lumps of marshmallow, and they tasted really good. The last thing we did was hold the circle of marshmallow over a candle. That made it soft and mushy.
Experimenting with marshmallows is fun!

Hi Jude,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great description of the marshmallow experiment.
I liked the sound of the frozen marshmallow goo. Did it break off when you bit into it? The stuff toasted over the candle also sounds tasty. I didn't like the sound of the microwaved marshmallows! Hope your finger is okay.
Love,
Great Aunt Barby
Next time ask Granny if you can make Ooblek by blending cornstarch and water. You can't eat it but it is really fun to play with. Then you can read Bartholomew and the Ooblek by Dr. Seuss.
ReplyDeleteThis is more science with marshmallows than we ever dreamed of. Fun and Yum!
ReplyDeleteBetween the matches on the Advent calendar and the candles with marshmallows, these two should have a good understanding of fire-----if they don't becomy pyromaniacs! Love your creativity.
